The Department of Applied Foreign Languages, first established as the Department of Office Administration in 1966, was founded early in the college’s history. To satisfy the needs of society, the department’s evening division was set up in 1967. In 1977, the department was reorganized and renamed the Department of Secretarial Science. After a further extension, a five-year program was begun in 1986. During this period, students were trained to become competent office workers to handle general administrative and secretarial affairs in industry and business. In 1991, the College was designated a four-year university; the department consequently became the Department of Foreign Languages and International Communication in 1992 and started another branch at Kaohsiung campus. The department emphasized language communication skills and literature courses. Because the world is moving fast toward internationalization, and industry needs professionals with language expertise. Therefore, the department again changed its name in 1998 to the Department of Applied Foreign Languages. Now the department’s goal is to train students to have skills in different fields, so they can become business professionals with competent language ability, good English teachers, or language interpreters.
In 1997, the Department of Applied Foreign Languages was first established at the Kaohsiung branch campus of Shih Chien University. Following its foundation, the chairperson of the Applied Foreign Languages Department at the university’s main Taipei campus also directed the program at the Kaohsiung campus. However, in August 2000 the university appointed a chairman for the Kaohsiung campus Applied Foreign Languages Department. There are two kinds of programs in the Applied Foreign Languages Department, a four-year program and a two-year program leading to a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree.
